One Sentence that can Change your Life forever!
Nov 11, 2023I read a statement that has been on my mind all week.
"When we know where we are trying to go, we get there much more quickly." - Steven Kotler
It seems so obvious.
It seems so simple
It seems so easy.
Which makes me wonder...
"How can such an obvious truth be so seldom lived?"
Right?
Maybe you are thinking, "What can this simple sentence do for me as a Christian?"
Well, I think it has the power to turn our lives upside down.
Don't believe me?
Let's Grab a coffee and chat a while.
How this one statement can change your life.
Many live life on autopilot.
And that is not good.
We have this strange assumption, that because we grew physically without much thought or effort... other areas of growth will be the same.
We couldn't be more wrong.
Growth in life requires Intentionality.
Zig Ziglar once said
"If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time." - Zig Ziglar
Sadly... in many areas of our life... we aren't consciously aiming at anything.
Consciously being the key word.
True... We have a vague sense of where we want to go, but we aren't clear on it...
- In the realms of relationships
- In the realms of Spiritual Growth
- In the realms of Character Development.
In many areas we just float.
Quick Story Illustrating the Point:
I was recently talking to a young man about His future.
This young man is on the cusp of adulthood. His whole life laying out in front of him. And he is a great young man.
To his enormous credit... He has crystal clear plans on what He wants to do...
...but it seemed He was overlooking something even more vital.
Who did He want to Be?
So I sat down with him at a local coffee shop and asked him to name the traits of a good man.
(P.S. His list was awesome!)
After he made the list I paused and reminded him of the quote.
"When we know where we are trying to go, we get there much more quickly." - Steven Kotler
So I sent him the list he had made for him to pray about and focus on.
The truth is...
many young men hope to become good men by osmosis...
They think that manhood comes automatically at a certain age...
But, as you probably know... that is a lie.
You must choose to be a man. It must be intentional.
The same is true with being a Godly wife...
You must intentionally choose to become one... and to do that, you must be crystal clear on what that means.
What are you aiming at?
Have you taken time to define it?
"When we know where we are trying to go, we get there much more quickly." - Steven Kotler
Friend, we get to write the definition of our name by how we choose to live our lives.
- We can live hoping the definition is positive...
- or we can intentionally aim at becoming a certain type of man or woman.
I'm so encouraged!
This young man now has a crystal clear goal.
He knows exactly who God wants him to be.
His journey to being a respectable man will go much more quickly now.
How about you?
- Have you outlined exactly who you desire to be? (better yet who God desires you to be)
- What do you hope will be said of you at your funeral?
- What would you love for people to say when asked to describe you? (I'm not talking about being rich, or good looking... but when it comes to things you can control... what would you want them to say?)
- Be as specific as possible.
- Don't just say "Christlike" define what that means.
- Humble
- Wise
- Loving
- Sacrificial
- Reliable
- Etc.
And once you have your list, begin praying for God to develop these traits in you.
And when decisions come, ask yourself... can I be who I'm supposed to be while doing this?
Friend,
"When we know where we are trying to go, we get there much more quickly." - Steven Kotler
I could spend thousands of words applying this statement to different areas:
- Church culture
- Dating Relationships
- Marriage Relationships
- Parenting
- etc
But I will let you take this principle and apply it to different areas of your own life.

"Get crystal clear on where you are trying to go in different areas of your life. It will speed up your progress toward the goal."
